Planet Leeds is a free cultural street festival that celebrates the diversity of Leeds through music, dance, poetry and drama.
It takes place every summer in the heart of the city of Leeds, on Briggate – the city’s busiest shopping street.
Leeds is the most culturally plural city in the UK after London.
In other words, Leeds has the highest number of different cultures in one city, outside of London.
We think this is something to celebrate – and this is why we do Planet Leeds.
Planet Leeds was born during a time of much anti-fascist activity in the city of Leeds.
Too many good people were spending too much of their time trying to prevent anti-cultural diversity movements, that they weren’t doing anything directly positive to promote the cultural plurality of the city.
Planet Leeds grabbed the well known saying ‘actions speak louder than words’ and put on its first street festival in 2007, choosing to simply celebrate Leeds’ diversity without getting involved in the politics.
Planet Leeds is now an annual street festival run on a shoestring – by the city of Leeds, for the city of Leeds.
